Pollinate Labs Wins The Rebranding Mandate For 4700BC After Marico Deal

A tub of popcorn and a paintbrush as halftone cutouts, for Pollinate Labs winning the strategic rebranding mandate for gourmet snacking brand 4700BC

Pollinate Labs has been appointed to lead the strategic repositioning and rebranding of 4700BC, as the premium snacking brand enters its next phase following Marico Limited's acquisition of a majority stake earlier this year.

  • Agency: Pollinate Labs, a Mumbai-based design house
  • Client: 4700BC, founded in 2013 by Chirag Gupta
  • Scope: brand repositioning, visual identity, packaging architecture and the broader brand world
  • Also covers: establishing gifting as a strategic growth vertical
  • Portfolio today: popcorn, popped chips, makhana, crunchy corn and nachos

What Pollinate Labs Has To Solve

How to make a brand bigger without sanding off what made it work. 4700BC pioneered gourmet popcorn in India and built its following on experimentation, irreverence and flavour-led character. The mandate requires retaining exactly those qualities while creating a platform capable of supporting far larger business ambitions across new categories, occasions and consumer segments.

Chirag Gupta, founder of 4700BC, described the problem in the same terms. "As we enter this next chapter, our ambition is significantly larger, both in terms of the categories we can play in and the consumers we can reach," he said. "We wanted a partner who could help us evolve without losing the spirit that made 4700BC distinctive in the first place."

Why This Is A Systems Problem, Not A Logo

Siddharth Khandelwal, co-founder of Pollinate Labs, was explicit that the scale of ambition changes what kind of design question this is. "4700BC is one of those rare Indian brands that didn't simply enter a category. It helped create one," he said. "This isn't simply about what 4700BC should look like next. It is about building a brand system capable of supporting that scale of business."

He added that the system will need to move confidently into new categories, occasions and consumer cohorts without losing what made people fall in love with it, and described the agency's role as identifying what is inherently ownable about the brand and amplifying it, from positioning and identity through packaging, gifting and launch. That last item, gifting, is the tell about where the growth is expected: it is a substantially larger and more seasonal business than everyday snacking, and it demands a very different kind of packaging architecture.
