Hybrid Work Changed Agencies. Did It Change Creativity?

The hybrid work argument in advertising has calcified into two anecdotes. One side remembers an idea that came from overhearing something in a corridor. The other remembers finally getting a full day to think without being interrupted by someone remembering a corridor.

Both stories are true and neither is evidence. Four years on, remarkably little about this has been measured.

What hybrid work demonstrably changed

The operating model did. Review cycles became scheduled rather than ambient, feedback moved into writing, and the informal apprenticeship that ran on proximity got much weaker, which is the clearest and least disputed effect.

Hiring geography changed too, and for Indian agencies that has been a real gain: a department is no longer limited to people who can reach a particular building in a particular city, which is a bigger shift than the debate usually credits.

Remote work did not remove collaboration. It removed the accidental kind, and nobody has worked out how to schedule an accident.

What is harder to claim

That the work got worse. The claim is made constantly and rests almost entirely on the speaker's preference, because output quality in advertising is judged by awards and results that move for a dozen other reasons in the same period.

The IPA Agency Census 2025, covering UK agencies, describes substantial change in how agencies work without settling what it did to the output. That gap is honest and worth keeping, rather than filled with whichever anecdote is nearest.

Where the real loss sits

If there is one, it is probably not in the ideas. It is in the juniors, who learned by sitting near people and absorbing things nobody thought to say out loud.

That is an argument for deliberate teaching rather than for mandatory attendance, though attendance is easier to instruct and so tends to be what gets instructed.
