OpenAI has announced updates to ChatGPT aimed at improving response quality and expanding access for free users.
- Plus and Pro users: GPT-5.6 Sol updated for sharper factual accuracy, plus a new reasoning slider on web, mobile and desktop
- Free and Go users: GPT-5.6 Luna becomes the default model this week, with unlimited text chats and a new Think button rolling out next week
- Sol's design goal: Adapt detail to the question, use tighter formatting, and offer corrections rather than simply agreeing
- Continued limits: File uploads, image generation and other tools remain capped for free users
- Safety additions: New safeguards for users believed to be under 18, covering romantic roleplay, age-restricted content and related risk areas
Fewer Errors, Broader Free-Tier Access
The updated GPT-5.6 Sol is designed to make fewer factual errors, particularly on questions involving dates, numbers, sources, rules and assumptions, and is available only in ChatGPT's Chat experience; the version of Sol used in Work and Codex is unchanged. OpenAI said it has added evaluations for model performance with under-18 users and trained the model to encourage teenagers to connect with trusted people when they may need support.
