Indian Express Group Signs OpenAI Deal Covering Seven Languages

The Indian Express Group and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership that will make content from participating Express Group publications more discoverable in ChatGPT, with attribution and direct links back to the original reporting.

  • Publications covered initially: The Indian Express, The Financial Express and the Group's business properties
  • Content: both live reporting and archived material
  • Languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati
  • Mechanism: responses identify the original publication and carry direct links to the full article
  • Editorial control: the Group retains complete and independent control over its journalism

What The Indian Express Group Deal Covers

When selected summaries or excerpts are surfaced in response to a relevant question, they will clearly identify the original publication and include direct links to the full articles. The stated aim is to help a reader move from an AI-generated response to the original reporting, which gives publishers attribution and readers a route to the source.

The seven-language scope is the part that distinguishes this from most publisher agreements. English, Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali and Gujarati covers a genuinely national readership rather than the English-reading slice, and it is the first Indian deal of this type to be framed around Indian-language reporting at that breadth.

How Both Sides Described It

Nandagopal Rajan, chief executive of Indian Express Digital, pointed to the Group's record of investigations and news breaks as what makes it distinctive, and said the partnership creates another way for readers to discover reporting from its national network of journalists while keeping clear attribution and a direct route to the source.

"As technology changes how people find and consume information, our priority remains credible journalism, with full editorial responsibility for everything we publish," Rajan said. Varun Shetty, vice president of media partnerships at OpenAI, said the partnership would help more people discover The Indian Express's investigative and explanatory journalism, and that clear attribution and direct links reflect the company's approach to working with publishers. The Group retains complete and independent editorial control over its journalism under the arrangement. More industry news.
