What AI Review Summaries Do To Brands

For years, a shopper deciding between two products would scroll through the reviews and form a view. Now many large marketplaces and apps put AI review summaries at the top instead: a short generated paragraph telling the shopper what customers generally like and dislike. For a growing number of buyers, that paragraph is the review.
No brand writes it, and every brand is judged by it.
What review summaries reward
Consistency. A summary picks up what many reviewers say, not what one says eloquently. A product that reliably does one thing well will be described that way. A product with a recurring flaw, a lid that leaks or a size that runs small, will have that flaw stated plainly to everyone who visits.
That is arguably fairer than the old system, where a few detailed reviews at the top could dominate perception. It is also less forgiving.
One angry review used to be scrolled past. A pattern of mild ones now becomes a sentence.
What they flatten
Nuance and context. A complaint that applies to one variant can end up attached to the whole product. A delivery problem, which is the platform's or the seller's, can read as a product problem. Praise for something distinctive tends to be compressed into generic phrases like good quality or value for money, which say little about why this brand rather than another.
For brands that built their reputation on a specific promise, that compression is a quiet loss.
How brands should respond
Read the summaries for every key product on every platform, regularly, the way a brand once read its press. They are the clearest view of what customers repeat to each other.
Then fix what they surface. A summary cannot be edited, but the experience it describes can. Packaging, sizing guides, product descriptions and after-sales handling all feed into what customers write next. Brand teams that treat the summary as a weekly report from their customers, rather than a threat to be managed, will find it one of the most honest research tools they have.
The one thing that will not work is gaming the reviews underneath. Platforms watch for that, and a summary built on manufactured praise is only one pattern away from saying so.
