Do You Need Advertising School To Work In Advertising?

Advertising school is rarely the first thing an Indian creative director asks about. The first thing is almost always the portfolio, and the second is how the candidate talks about the work. The degree comes much later, if at all, which makes school a less obvious requirement than it can look from outside the industry.

It does not make it useless.

What advertising school genuinely gives

Time and structure to build a book, with feedback from people who have done the job. Deadlines that resemble real ones. A peer group, which turns into a network surprisingly quickly. And for people without industry contacts, a route into internships that might otherwise be invisible.

Those are real advantages, and they are worth more to someone with no other way in.

Agencies hire the book. School is one way to build it, not the only one.

What you can build without it

A portfolio of self-set briefs, ideally for real brands with a clear problem, showing thinking as well as execution. Work for small local clients who will let you try things. A visible practice online, which for a social-first creative can be a portfolio in itself.

Deloitte India's 2025 survey found 94% of Indian Gen Z respondents valuing hands-on learning, which is broadly how most creatives say they actually learned the job.

The honest trade-off

School costs money and time and gives structure. Building alone costs little but discipline and gives you no one to tell you the work is not good enough yet.

The second is the harder problem. Whatever the route, the creatives who progress fastest are the ones who found someone willing to be honest about their book early.

It is also worth asking what a given school's graduates are doing two or three years later. A course is only as useful as the work its students go on to make, and that is easy to check.
