Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro With Variable Aperture And 2nm A20 Pro Chip
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its "Surprise and Shine" event, alongside new Apple Watch models, AirPods and health focused software features.
- Chip: A20 Pro, built on a 2 nanometre process, with a six core CPU, seven core GPU and dual 16 core Neural Engine
- AI performance: Apple claims twice that of the previous A19 Pro
- Main camera: 48MP Fusion, with a physically variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4.0
- Battery: up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max, and 50 per cent charge in 15 minutes
- Connectivity: C2 cellular modem and N1 chip, with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6
What The iPhone 18 Pro Camera Does Differently
It moves. Rather than simulating depth of field in software, the 48MP Fusion main camera uses six laser cut blades to physically change the aperture: f/1.48 in low light, f/1.8 for portraits, and f/4.0 when more of a group scene needs to be in focus. Manual controls for shutter speed, ISO and histograms come with it.
The other camera addition is aimed at a different problem. Reference Image captures signed sensor data as a digital negative, designed to help establish whether a photograph is genuine and has not been altered by AI. For a company that sells the camera as the reason to upgrade, provenance is becoming part of the specification.
Why The Chip Story Is About Heat
Because sustained performance, not peak performance, is what a phone actually delivers. The A20 Pro adopts packaging inspired by Apple's M series processors, placing memory alongside the chip die, and a larger vapour chamber handles the thermals, with Apple claiming up to 40 per cent better sustained gaming performance.
Efficiency gains feed the battery claim of up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max, helped along by the continued expansion of Apple's eSIM only approach, which frees internal space for larger cells. Taken together the launch is less a single headline product than an argument about the hardware working as one system, which is also the harder thing for a rival to copy in a single cycle.
