Air India Appoints Former Ethiopian Airlines Chief Tewolde Gebremariam As CEO & MD
Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

Handover After The Stabilisation Phase
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, framed the change as a deliberate handover between phases rather than a response to trouble: "Having completed the initial phase of stabilisation, integration, and fleet commitments under Campbell's guidance, Air India is now entering a critical execution and expansion era. Tewolde's track record in building one of the world's most efficient and profitable airline groups makes him uniquely suited to lead Air India." Wilson's tenure since 2022 covered the airline's post-Tata-takeover integration and fleet commitments, the groundwork phase; Gebremariam's brief is described explicitly as execution and expansion on top of that base.
A Track Record Built At Ethiopian Airlines
Gebremariam built his reputation running Ethiopian Airlines into one of Africa's most efficient and profitable carriers, and his own comments frame Air India as a parallel opportunity at a different starting point: "Air India carries an incredible legacy, and the opportunity to build a world-class global airline that reflects India's extraordinary economic potential is uniquely exciting.
