Snap Launches SPECS Intelligence, An AI That Acts Before It Is Asked

SPECS Intelligence surfacing a meeting briefing and a travel itinerary across a Mac, an iPhone and SPECS glasses

Snap has launched SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service that works across iPhone, Mac and its SPECS augmented reality glasses. It learns a user's goals, priorities, relationships and routines from the apps they connect, and surfaces information and actions without waiting to be prompted.

  • Company: Snap Inc.
  • Product: SPECS Intelligence
  • Devices: iPhone, Mac and SPECS AR glasses
  • Features: Corners, which organise areas of life such as work and family, and Goals, for tracking objectives
  • On the glasses: "Hey SPECS" for flight and hotel details, reservations, reminders and a daily briefing
  • Access: invitation-only early access through the SPECS Mac app
  • Preview: open to users aged 18 and over in the US through the SPECS iOS app, limited to insights from Gmail and Google Calendar

What SPECS Intelligence Does Differently

It does not wait for a question. Most assistants answer when asked; this one is built to decide what a user needs next. Snap's examples are mundane on purpose: before a meeting it pulls together the decisions, questions and reminders that matter, and before a trip it assembles flight, hotel and dinner plans while flagging a work deadline that falls during the visit.

Chief executive Evan Spiegel framed it simply: "Computers should fit into our lives, not the other way around." The glasses are where that idea is meant to land, carrying the same context from the laptop into the physical world.

The Advertising Line Is The Real News

Snap is an advertising business, and it has put a specific promise in writing. The company says content from connected accounts will not be used to train or fine-tune its AI models, or to serve personalised ads, and that Snap staff cannot view the personal content used by the service. Processing runs on device and in secure cloud infrastructure.

That is a notable separation for a company whose revenue depends on targeting. An assistant with read access to someone's email and calendar holds richer intent data than any ad platform has ever had, and Snap has chosen to wall it off rather than monetise it.

Why Marketers Should Watch The Anticipation Layer

If assistants start deciding what to surface before a person searches, they become a new gatekeeper between brands and attention. Nobody buys placement in a briefing, at least not yet, and the rules for how commercial information enters an anticipatory feed have not been written.

For now the preview is US-only and limited to personal insights. Snap's announcement is on its investor relations site. More ad tech.
