ChatGPT Arrives Inside Microsoft Word, On Every Plan Including Free

OpenAI has made ChatGPT available inside Microsoft Word, through the same Microsoft add-in that already carries it into Excel and PowerPoint. The company recorded the change in its release notes on 17 September 2026.
- Where: a ChatGPT sidebar inside Microsoft Word
- What it does: drafts from notes, summarises a document, revises selected text, and adjusts headings and formatting
- Availability: all ChatGPT plans, including Free
- How to get it: install the ChatGPT add-in from Microsoft Marketplace, then sign in
- For businesses: workspace admins control access, and Microsoft 365 admins must also allow the add-in
- From 1 October 2026: Word access is on by default for business workspaces
What ChatGPT Does In Word
It works on the document rather than beside it. The sidebar can take notes and turn them into a draft, summarise what is already on the page, rewrite a selected passage and change headings and formatting, without the copy and paste that has defined the last two years of AI writing.
For business workspaces, OpenAI says Word usage is billed on token-based pricing at the API rates for the model used, which is a different arrangement from a flat seat fee.
Why It Matters For Marketing Teams
Most brand and agency writing still happens in Word, and this is the first time OpenAI's assistant sits in that file rather than in a browser tab. It also puts OpenAI directly alongside Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft's own assistant in the same application: one is an add-in a team installs, the other is sold with the licence. Teams that standardised on Copilot now have a second assistant to govern, and IT has to allow the add-in before anyone can use it.
