Mahesh Motwani Leaves Initiative Media India After Nearly 25 Years

Mahesh Motwani, who has left Initiative Media India after a stint of nearly 25 years to work as an independent consultant

Mahesh Motwani has left Initiative Media India after 24 years and nine months, closing an association with the Lintas and IPG ecosystem that ran for effectively his entire career.

  • Left: Initiative Media India, after 24 years and nine months
  • Last role: executive vice president, from December 2001 to August 2026
  • Next: self employed consultant, from September 2026
  • Career start: the Lintas ecosystem in 2001
  • Earlier: Lintas India and Lintas Media Group

What Mahesh Motwani Built There

He joined the Lintas ecosystem in 2001 and moved into Initiative Media India that December, staying through the agency's absorption into IPG Mediabrands and rising to executive vice president. Twenty five years in one media agency is close to unheard of in a discipline where three years is a long tenure and five is a career highlight.

In his farewell note he described the period as a life lived at the organisation rather than time merely spent there, and credited his team for standing by him through every circumstance. He also thanked senior colleagues who mentored him while leaving him the room to grow, and named clients, media partners and industry friends who, despite professional differences, became part of an extended work family.

Why The Timing Reads The Way It Does

His words were plain about the direction: as he put it, he enters a new phase from 1 September with an open mind and an open sky, resetting his compass for new destinations and fresh challenges.

The exit lands in a period when a noticeable number of senior media people are reassessing what they want from an agency career. The economics of media planning and buying have shifted, holding companies have restructured repeatedly, and the value once placed on a long institutional memory now competes with the value placed on speed. A consultant with 25 years of client and media owner relationships is a specific answer to that shift, and it is the answer a growing number of people at his level are choosing. More appointments.
