Deven Deshpande's Rise At PUMA
An internal one. Deshpande joined PUMA in 2019 as a management trainee and has since worked across brand strategy, sports marketing, integrated marketing communications, digital and influencer marketing, social media, consumer engagement and B2B e-commerce.
Most recently he led social and influencer marketing, the part of the business focused on PUMA's creator and social-led activity. His experience overall spans more than a decade across brand building, digital engagement and marketing strategy, including earlier roles at Choose To Thinq and Larsen & Toubro Infotech in Bengaluru.
Why The Move Fits
Sports marketing for a sportswear brand in India is increasingly run through the same channels Deshpande has managed. Athlete partnerships are amplified through social, launches are seeded through creators, and fans meet the brand on their phones long before they meet it in a stadium.
Moving the person who ran those channels into the sports marketing seat brings that experience to the part of the business where PUMA's athlete and team associations live. It also continues a pattern common at large consumer brands of promoting digital specialists into broader marketing leadership.
The appointment widens his remit from one channel to the whole sports marketing function, the part of the business that decides how the brand shows up around athletes, teams and sporting moments. PUMA describes it as a transition into sports marketing leadership, drawing on his digital marketing, consumer engagement and brand communications experience.
The company has not disclosed his reporting line. No statement from PUMA accompanied the announcement.
