BharatPe Names Yugal Tiwari Chief Product And Marketing Officer

BharatPe has appointed Yugal Tiwari as chief product and marketing officer, a single seat covering both the product roadmap and the brand. He joins from Paytm, where he held senior product leadership.

  • Company: BharatPe
  • Role: chief product and marketing officer
  • Previously: senior product leadership at Paytm, across UPI payments, onboarding, the consumer app home screen, referrals and rewards
  • Before that: over two years at CRED, on consumer payment products including credit card bill payments, UPI, recharges, utility payments and Tap & Pay
  • Education: MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, BTech from COEP Technological University

Why Yugal Tiwari Holds Both Halves

Combining product and marketing is unusual on an Indian org chart and increasingly common in fintech, for a practical reason. In a payments business the product is the advertisement: what persuades a merchant to switch is the settlement time, the reconciliation screen and whether the device works on a bad network, none of which a campaign can improve.

A leader who owns both is accountable for the whole promise rather than for a message about it. The risk is the familiar one: two full jobs, and the brand work tends to lose whenever a release is late.

The Merchant Market He Is Walking Into

BharatPe built its name on the smallest merchants, where the competitive question was never brand preference but whether a QR sticker and a soundbox were already on the counter. That market is now crowded, the acquisition subsidies have thinned, and the difference between providers is service rather than novelty.

The timing is pointed. From 15 October a merchant discount rate begins on larger UPI payments, which gives every payment provider its first real pricing conversation with merchants in years, and gives whoever handles marketing something specific to explain.

What To Watch

Whether BharatPe's advertising starts arguing about the things merchants actually compare, or stays in the category's habit of shouting about scale. A product leader in the marketing chair usually moves a brand towards the former, and the work will show it within two quarters. The company's merchant products are listed on BharatPe's own site.
