Why Advertising Needs 24-Year-Olds And 54-Year-Olds In The Same Room

Two chairs of very different heights pulled up to the same low table, both casting one shared shadow

Nobody in an agency decides to split the room by age. It happens through a hundred small allocations: who gets the platform brief, who gets the brand film, who gets invited to the client dinner.

The sorting is rarely hostile. It usually starts as efficiency. The person who understands the platform natively gets the platform work, and the person who has sat through fifteen years of client relationships gets the client. Both assignments are defensible on the day. Repeated for two years, they produce two groups of people who no longer know how the other one thinks.

What the same room is actually for

Not harmony. The value is friction of a specific kind: someone who knows why an idea will not survive legal, sitting next to someone who knows why it will not survive the comments.

Those are different kinds of knowledge and neither is guessable. One is learned by watching things go wrong slowly over years; the other by living somewhere the older person visits occasionally as a tourist. Put them in separate rooms and each will produce confident work with a blind spot the other could have named in a sentence.

The industry is thinning at one end

The IPA's 2025 agency census, published in February 2026, found that only 8 per cent of UK agency staff are over 51. That is a British figure and the Indian picture is its own, but the direction is familiar to anyone who has looked around an Indian agency floor lately. The industry is not merely young. It is losing the top of its age range faster than it notices.

The IPA's own work on age inclusion makes the obvious point: an industry selling to a population of every age, staffed almost entirely by people under 40, is guessing about most of its audience.

An agency that has quietly sorted itself by age has two teams, each certain the other does not understand the work.

What actually mixes a room

Not a mentoring programme, which pairs people for an hour a month and leaves the real work segregated. What mixes a room is a live brief with one deadline and two people of different vintage who both have to sign their name to it.

That is uncomfortable to staff, because it is slower in week one and it takes the platform brief away from the person who would have finished it fastest. The return arrives later, in the form of work that does not have to be rescued in the final week by someone who saw the problem coming and was not in the room.
