Live Shopping Is Finally Working, Quietly

Live shopping in India has been declared imminent roughly once a year since 2020, usually by someone pointing at China. The launches that followed that logic mostly failed, and the quiet version that works looks nothing like them.

It did not start with shopping. It started with people who were already streaming for an audience that already turned up, and the commerce was attached to that afterwards.

Why the big-bang live shopping launches failed

They asked an audience to show up at a scheduled time for a shopping event, which is a television behaviour applied to a platform where nobody schedules anything. The stream had no reason to exist before the products arrived.

The working version inverts this. The stream exists anyway, for gaming or beauty or cooking, and the product appears inside something the viewer already came for.

Nobody sets a reminder for a sale. They set one for a person.

What the infrastructure now looks like

It is becoming ordinary. Platforms like AnyMind have launched tools in India that let streamers connect a channel, see performance, take brand campaigns and track earnings in one place, starting with YouTube Live.

The formats available inside a stream are now specific: pre-roll and mid-roll, overlays, in-chat integrations, streamer-read calls to action, promotional codes and product placement, measured on watch time, concurrent viewers and click-throughs.

What brands still get wrong

Treating a stream as a broadcast slot rather than a room. The purchases happen because the streamer answers a question in the chat, which is not a thing a brand can script, and is the entire mechanism.
