Swapnil Jain And The Engineering Behind Ather

A vehicle is the least forgiving product a brand can sell. It is expensive, it is used every day, it is compared with the neighbour’s, and every weakness eventually appears in public on a road.
Swapnil Jain co-founded Ather Energy in 2013 with Tarun Mehta, both of them IIT Madras graduates, and has led the engineering and technology side of the company.
Why engineering sets the brand ceiling
Everything a two-wheeler brand claims, range, ride quality, reliability in monsoon, behaviour after four years, is an engineering output. Advertising can frame it and cannot create it.
In a young category the risk is sharper, because there is no established expectation of what normal looks like, and each early failure is read as the category failing rather than one vehicle.
Building the vehicle and the software
Ather took on more than most new manufacturers by building its own connected dashboard and vehicle software, which meant the company was maintaining a product that changes after it has been sold.
That is a different relationship from the traditional one. A scooter that improves through updates is closer to a phone, and it creates an expectation of continued attention that a manufacturer has to fund for years.
A brand that ships updates has promised a relationship, not a purchase, and the cost of that promise sits in engineering.
Manufacturing in India, for India
Designing for Indian roads, loads, temperatures and charging behaviour is not a localisation exercise. It changes the suspension, the thermal management and the assumptions about how the vehicle will be treated.
The second founder again
As with several companies in this series, one founder is the public voice and the other holds the part that determines whether the promise survives contact with customers. The pattern is consistent enough to be worth noticing.
What advertising people should take from it
That in a category like this the brief is written by the engineering roadmap. An agency that does not know what the product can actually do in eighteen months is writing cheques the factory has not agreed to.
