Ramoji Rao, Who Built an Audience Before a Market

Most Indian business houses buy media attention. One built the attention itself and then placed businesses inside it.

Ramoji Rao, born in 1936, began with the Margadarsi chit fund in the early sixties, launched the farmers magazine Annadata in 1969, and started the Telugu daily Eenadu from Visakhapatnam in 1974.

Starting with the reader nobody counted

Annadata was aimed at farmers, which in 1969 was an audience advertisers regarded as unreachable and not worth reaching. Serving it first gave the group a relationship with rural Andhra that no competitor could assemble later by spending money.

A regional daily as a mass brand

Eenadu treated Telugu readership as a market in its own right rather than as a translation of a national one. That is a different editorial and commercial proposition, and it built a scale of loyalty that English language publishing in India rarely achieves.

An audience you assembled yourself is the one asset a competitor cannot outbid you for.

What the name was allowed to carry

The group extended into the ETV network of television channels, film production and the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, which became the largest film production facility in the world. The same name also stood behind financial services, which is an unusual stretch and worked because the trust was personal rather than categorical.

Ramoji Rao and the limits of the model

A brand held together by one person is efficient and fragile in equal measure. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan and died in Hyderabad in June 2024 at eighty seven, and was cremated with state honours.

What advertising people should take from it

That owned audience beats bought audience, and that the calculation has not changed since 1969. A client debating a media budget against building something people return to on their own should look at how much of this group was funded by an audience it created for itself.
