P.C. Musthafa, Who Branded Something Nobody Branded

Creating a brand inside an existing category is difficult. Creating one where the category itself does not exist, because everybody already makes the thing at home, is a different order of problem.

Musthafa founded iD Fresh Food in 2005 with about twenty five thousand rupees and four cousins, working out of a small unit with two grinders, a mixer and a sealing machine.

The observation the business came from

A cousin noticed idli and dosa batter being sold loose and unhygienically packed in neighbourhood shops. That is the whole insight, and it is a complaint rather than an aspiration, which is often where durable consumer businesses begin.

Selling hygiene, not taste

Taste was never the pitch, because a household that has made its own batter for decades is not looking for a better recipe. The proposition was that the packet was clean and that nothing had been added to keep it alive on a shelf. Preservative free is a difficult claim commercially, since it shortens shelf life and punishes every weakness in the supply chain.

A brand that promises nothing has been added has to prove it every single day, in a product that spoils.

Ten packets a day

Early sales ran at around ten packets a day. The company is now valued in the thousands of crores. The slow start is the important part of the story, because a category that does not exist cannot be bought quickly with media. It has to be converted household by household, and the first customers are the ones who tell the next ones.

Where Musthafa came from

He grew up in Chennalode in Wayanad, left school after failing a year, worked alongside his father in the fields, and later took a computer science degree at NIT Calicut and an MBA at IIM Bangalore. The route matters because it explains a company built on frugality rather than on funding.

What advertising people should take from it

That category creation is not a launch. It is years of repetition against a habit, and the brief should say so rather than promising a campaign that will do the work of a decade.
