OpenAI Tests A Visual Ad Format Inside ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing a visual ad format in ChatGPT, to be tested first during image generation, alongside expanded measurement tools and partnerships.
- Company: OpenAI, for ChatGPT Ads
- Format: visual ads shown during image generation
- Testing: begins later this month in the United States with an initial group of advertisers
- Labelling: ads are labelled and displayed separately from the image being generated
- Stated reach: ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, according to the company
Why The Visual Ad Format Starts During Image Generation
Image generation is one of the few moments in an AI assistant where the user is genuinely waiting. The request is made, the result takes seconds, and the screen has nothing useful on it.
That is unsold attention of a kind the rest of the product does not offer, because a text answer arrives as it streams. Putting the first ads there is a design decision that avoids interrupting an answer, which is the thing users would object to most.
The Separation Is The Point
OpenAI says the ads will be labelled, displayed separately from the image being generated, and that advertising will not influence the answers the assistant gives.
That last commitment is the one the whole proposition rests on. An assistant people trust for recommendations is valuable precisely because the recommendations are not bought, and the moment that becomes unclear the inventory loses its worth. Keeping the ad visually and functionally outside the answer is how the company proposes to hold both.
The Measurement Build Is The Serious Signal
Alongside the format, OpenAI is adding integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp so advertisers can send conversion data from their own systems, and support for attribution partners across web and app including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin.
A new ad format is an experiment. A measurement stack is a commitment, because nobody builds attribution plumbing for something they intend to stop. More platform news.
