From Agency Employee To Independent Creative

People leave agencies for freedom and discover within a month that they have exchanged one set of constraints for another, less visible set.
The first surprise is that the work gets simpler and the job gets harder. Nobody is booking the call, writing the scope, chasing the purchase order or deciding what the rate should be. All of that was somebody's full-time role, and now it is an unpaid part of yours.
What people actually miss
Not the salary, at least not first. What goes missing first is the second opinion. In an agency, a bad idea dies quietly because somebody walking past said something. Alone, a bad idea can travel all the way to a client, and the discovery is expensive in a way that has nothing to do with money.
The second thing is the pipeline. An agency has a new business function; an independent has a good month followed by a quiet one, and the quiet one usually follows the good one because there was no time to look for work while delivering it.
Independence does not remove the politics. It removes the person who used to handle the politics for you.
The part that genuinely improves
Proximity to the decision. An independent creative talks to the person who actually decides, which removes three rounds of interpretation and most of the reason work gets diluted. For many people that single change is worth the instability, and they say so years later without qualification.
Craft usually improves too, because the work is no longer assigned by availability. You take what you are suited to, and the portfolio stops looking like a record of who was free that week.
What to have in place before leaving
Six months of costs, not three, because the first invoice arrives later than anyone plans for. A rate that assumes roughly half the year is unbillable. Two people who will read your work honestly and are not clients. And an answer to the question of what you do when you are ill, which is the thing nobody thinks about until it happens.
None of that makes the decision for anyone. It just means the decision gets made about the work rather than about a bad quarter.
