Contextual Targetings Quiet Return

Contextual targeting was the entire business of media buying for most of its history. You advertised tyres in a motoring magazine because the reader was already thinking about the road.
Then identifiers arrived and it became possible to follow the reader instead of buying the context, which was more precise and considerably more profitable to intermediaries. Privacy rules and platform changes have made that harder, and the old idea has returned with better machinery behind it.
Why Contextual Targeting Works Better Now
Because understanding a page is no longer a keyword match. A system can distinguish an article about a car launch from an article about a car crash, which is the distinction that made crude contextual buying embarrassing for brands.
It can also read video and audio, which opens the largest inventory in the Indian market to a method that previously only worked on text.
What It Solves For Indian Advertisers
Consent, mostly. A context-based buy does not need a profile of the person, which removes the part of the stack that data protection rules make most expensive to get right.
It also travels across languages in a way that identity-based buying never did well here, because a page in Marathi is as readable to a classifier as one in English, while identity graphs remain thin outside the metros.
Advertising next to the right thing is not a workaround for lost identifiers. It is what the medium did for a century.
Where It Is Oversold
Brand safety. Context tools are good at topic and mediocre at tone, and the failure mode is a brand appearing beside an article that is technically on-topic and entirely wrong in mood.
The practical answer is a human-reviewed inclusion list for anything sensitive, and context for scale beneath it. That is less exciting than the pitch and it is what the careful planners are actually doing.
