ChatGPT Locked Chats lets users hide selected conversations from regular chat history, pinned chats and standard conversation search, behind a four-digit account PIN.

  • Access: Projects, then Locked chats, with a four-digit account PIN
  • Mobile: Face ID, Touch ID or the device unlock method on supported devices
  • Plans: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu
  • Not included: Temporary, archived and group chats, and chats from shared links

What ChatGPT Locked Chats Is For

The shared screen. The feature is aimed at keeping a sensitive conversation out of view when somebody is presenting, screen-sharing or handing a device to another person, which is a different problem from securing data against an attacker.

Files uploaded or created inside a locked conversation are covered too. They stay reachable within that chat but are hidden from Space and from its search results while the conversation stays locked. Files added to Space separately keep the permissions they already had.

What It Is Not

OpenAI is explicit about the limits, and they matter more than the feature. Locking changes where a conversation appears and how it is reached. It does not add end-to-end encryption, does not change retention, does not alter existing model-improvement settings, and does not remove anything ChatGPT remembered before the lock was applied.

Nor does it override workplace rules. In Enterprise and Edu workspaces, locked conversations stay in the message logs available through the compliance platform.

The Trade-Off Worth Reading Before Using It

Resetting a forgotten PIN permanently deletes every locked chat, anything remembered only inside those chats, and any files the previous PIN protected. The action cannot be reversed and support cannot recover the content. That is a stronger consequence than most account-level locks carry, and it is the reason to treat the PIN as a credential rather than a convenience.

Unlocking is permanent in the other direction: a conversation returns to regular history through its three-dot menu, though it may take time to reappear in search. The feature is rolling out gradually, so eligible users may not see it immediately.
