When People Talk To Brands Instead Of Browsing Them

Browsing is a wide format. A category page, a shelf and a search results grid all show many things at once, and a brand can be found by someone who was not looking for it. When people talk to brands instead, they see one thing at a time.

That is the structural change, and it is easy to miss because the interface looks friendlier. When people talk to brands rather than browse them, the layout that allowed accidental discovery disappears, and what replaces it is a short list somebody else assembled.

What A Brand Loses When People Talk To Brands

Adjacency, mostly. On a shelf or a grid, a challenger sits beside the leader and gets compared. In a conversational answer, the challenger is either named or it is not, and being unnamed is not a weak position. It is no position at all.

The second loss is the browse itself. A lot of category learning happens while a shopper looks at things they do not buy, and that is where preference for the next purchase gets built.

On a shelf, losing is being picked up and put down. In a conversation, losing is not being mentioned.

Who Assembles The Shortlist

Somebody decides which three names an answer contains, and that decision is not visible to the brands in it or to the ones left out. Shelf space was at least purchasable and auditable. This is neither, yet.

What It Might Give Back

Conversation surfaces intent that browsing hides. A shopper who explains what they actually need has told a brand more in one sentence than a session of click data usually reveals, and for considered categories that is a genuine improvement.

It also rewards depth over shelf presence. A brand with real answers to specific questions can be surfaced for those questions without paying for prominence. That is a different competitive game, and not obviously a worse one for anybody except the brands whose position rested on being everywhere. Related: What Happens When Audiences Use AI Ad Filtering?
