Paul John Repacks The Whisky And Leaves It Alone

A whisky bottle and a carved elephant figure, as halftone cutouts, for the Paul John brand identity refresh

Paul John Whisky has refreshed its brand identity and packaging around a line it calls A Journey into Indian Craft. The company says the liquid itself is unchanged.

  • Brand: Paul John Whisky, from John Distilleries
  • The idea: A Journey into Indian Craft, widening the story from the product to people, places and craftsmanship
  • The unifying mark: the elephant, a long-standing Paul John symbol, reimagined to run across the range
  • Per expression: distinct illustrations, textures and visual cues reflecting each one's flavour profile and origin
  • Rollout: Nirvana, Brilliance and Bold first, with Select Casks and the rest of the portfolio following in phases
  • Unchanged: the whisky formula
  • Scale cited: exports to more than 44 countries and more than 400 international awards

Why Paul John Is Selling Provenance Rather Than Process

Because single malt from India has already won the technical argument. Four hundred international awards settle the question of whether the whisky is good, which means the next thing to establish is why it being Indian is a reason to choose it rather than a fact to overcome.

Goa and craft references on the pack do that work at the only moment it can be done. In a category where a buyer stands in front of a shelf without a salesperson, the bottle is the argument.

What Saying The Liquid Is Unchanged Is For

Reassuring the people who already buy it. A redesign in spirits reads to a loyal drinker as a reformulation, and that suspicion costs more than the design gains, which is why that sentence appears this early in the announcement.

The elephant doing unifying duty is the other defensive move. Keeping the one asset people already recognise means the range still looks like itself from three metres away, which is where the shelf decision actually happens.

What Was Said

Paul P John, chairman of John Distilleries, said the refreshed identity reflects the brand's evolution during international expansion, and that the liquid remains unchanged while the packaging communicates craft and origins.
