OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing advertising into the assistant for users on its Free and Go tiers, with more than 50 brands expected to begin running campaigns in the country this week.

  • Markets: India is among the first where OpenAI is expanding advertising at scale
  • Tiers carrying ads: Free and Go
  • First agency partners: WPP and Omnicom, on a non-exclusive basis
  • Agency scope: strategy, creative, measurement, brand safety, campaign execution
  • OpenAI lead: Dave Dugan, vice president and head of global ads solutions

What ChatGPT Ads Is Actually Selling

OpenAI is positioning the placement as a way to reach people while they are researching, comparing products or weighing a decision, rather than through search or display formats.

That is a different unit from a search ad, and the difference matters. A search ad buys a query that has already been formed. This buys the conversation in which someone is still working out what they want, which is earlier, softer and much harder to attribute. Advertisers who measure on last click will struggle to value it, and that is the argument the category will have first.

Why The Agency Partners Came First

WPP and Omnicom will work with brands on strategy, creative, measurement, brand safety and execution. Both arrangements are non-exclusive and OpenAI says it will add other agencies as the business expands.

Naming holding companies before naming a self-serve product tells you which advertisers this is built for at launch. Brand safety is doing quiet work in that list too: an ad appearing inside a generated answer sits closer to editorial than any banner ever did, and the question of what the assistant said immediately before the ad is one nobody has settled.

Why India Is Early

Dave Dugan said weekly active users in India have doubled year on year, and that many go beyond simple searches, asking questions, exploring options and weighing tradeoffs through conversation.

Doubling usage is the stated reason. The unstated one is that India is a market where a very large audience sits on free tiers, which is exactly where an ad-supported model has to work. If the format holds here it holds anywhere, and if it irritates people here it will do so at a scale nobody can hide.
