Google has appointed Nitin Gajria as managing director for Southeast Asia and South Asia frontier markets. He moves from leading the company's publisher partnerships business across Asia Pacific.

  • Role: managing director, Southeast Asia and South Asia frontier markets, Google
  • Previously: headed Google's publisher partnerships across Asia Pacific for three years, covering publisher and creator monetisation
  • Earlier at Google: four years leading investments across Sub-Saharan Africa, and large customer sales across Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos
  • Before Google: regional marketing director at Mead Johnson Nutrition, and more than 11 years at Procter & Gamble across Singapore and Australia
  • Experience: more than 25 years, of which more than 12 at Google
  • Related move: Sapna Chadha, who previously led the Southeast Asia and South Asia frontier business, has been elevated to vice president of Asia Pacific ads go-to-market strategy and operations

What Nitin Gajria Takes On

A set of markets that Google now counts on rather than experiments in. Gajria said that over the years he has seen Southeast Asia and the South Asia frontier markets go from strength to strength, and that the diversity, dynamism and entrepreneurial energy there remain unmatched. What excites him most, he added, is not the technology but what people in the region will do with it.

Why The Background Matters

His last three years were on the publisher and creator side, which is the part of Google's business that decides how money reaches the people making content. Moving from that seat into a country leadership role brings a monetisation view into a market where the advertising ecosystem is still being built rather than optimised.

The packaged goods years matter too. A decade at Procter & Gamble and a spell at Mead Johnson put him on the advertiser's side of the table before he ever sat on Google's, which is unusual for a platform country head.
