A smartphone and a string of festive lights, as halftone cutouts, for Sreeleela becoming the Vibe Face of HMD in India

HMD has named actor Sreeleela as the Vibe Face of its smartphones, bringing her on board ahead of the brand's festive campaigns in India.

  • Brand: HMD, for its smartphone portfolio in India
  • Signed: Sreeleela, as Vibe Face
  • Campaign shape: a 360 degree push across outdoor, print, digital, social media, video platforms and influencer networks
  • Timing: built around the festive season
  • Stated aim: a more contemporary and culturally relevant voice for the portfolio

Why Sreeleela And Why Not Just Call It An Ambassadorship

Vibe Face is not a standard title, and the choice of an invented one is the most deliberate thing in the announcement. A brand ambassador signals endorsement: this person uses and vouches for the product. A Vibe Face signals tone instead, and tone is what a phone brand reaches for when it cannot win on specification alone.

That matters for where HMD sits. It competes at accessible price points in a market where the spec sheet at any given price is close to identical across brands, because everyone is buying from the same component suppliers. When the hardware argument is exhausted, the remaining lever is what owning the phone says about the owner.

The Festive Window Is The Point

Signing a face immediately before the festive season is a timing decision rather than a brand building one. A large share of India's annual smartphone volume moves in this window, across online sales events and offline retail, and a brand entering it without a recognisable campaign presence tends to lose shelf conversation to the brands that have one.

The 360 degree plan reflects that. Outdoor and print do the work at the point of purchase in smaller towns, while digital, video and influencer networks carry the association for the younger audience the brand is targeting.

What Was Said

Ravi Kunwar, vice president and chief executive for HMD India and APAC, said the brand is entering its next phase of growth and that Sreeleela has built a strong connection with young audiences across India, with the festive season an opportune moment to introduce the next chapter of the portfolio.

Sreeleela said she liked that the brand has its own point of view and is willing to do things differently. More brand news.
