Google Is Testing A Buy Button For Flipkart Inside Gemini

Google is piloting a feature that lets people buy from Flipkart without leaving Gemini or the AI Mode in Search. The test is running in India with a limited set of users and products.
- Where: Gemini, and AI Mode in Google Search
- How it works: a Buy button appears on certain Flipkart product listings, opening a Flipkart-branded checkout inside the AI interface rather than sending the user to Flipkart's site
- Categories: smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories
- Scale: a limited pilot, with a broader rollout planned for later in October
- Timing: alongside the festive season and Flipkart's Big Billion Days
- Notable: rival retailers appear in listings without a Buy button, which points to selective merchant participation
What Changes About The Journey
The destination. Search has always ended by sending someone somewhere, and the value of that exit is what the entire performance industry is priced on. A checkout that completes inside the assistant removes the handover, and with it the last-click attribution that both sides have built their measurement around.
A Google spokesperson said the company is always testing new features and experiences to help people discover and connect with businesses, and declined to give further detail.
Why Only Flipkart Has The Buy Button
Because it shows this is a negotiated arrangement, not an open standard. Other retailers surface in the same listings without the option to buy, which means the ability to close a sale inside the assistant is something a merchant enters into rather than something the interface offers everyone. That makes it a distribution deal in the shape of a product feature.
What Brands Should Watch
Three things. Whether the broader October rollout keeps the same category limits; whether participation stays selective once the festive period ends; and what any of it does to the economics of paid search in a market where Flipkart is among the largest advertisers. None of that is answerable yet, and Google is not saying.
