Anthropic has made Claude available with in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock. Requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint are now processed within the country.

  • Models: Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5
  • Route: Amazon Bedrock, with the audit trails and access controls risk and compliance teams ask for before production
  • What changes: data residency, which regulated institutions have been treating as a precondition rather than a preference
  • Named early users from private preview: Reliance and CRED
  • Named in use across Indian industry: Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, NPCI, TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Mahindra, Godrej Industries, Swiggy, Zomato, Razorpay, Freshworks and Invideo
  • Scale claims: TCS rolling out to 50,000 associates, Infosys running a dedicated Anthropic centre of excellence, and NPCI building its agentic platform AiNxt on Claude
  • Timeline: Bengaluru office opened in February, partner network launched in March, first partner certification held in Bengaluru in August

Why Claude Needed To Run Inside India

Because for a bank, an insurer or a public body, the question was never whether the model was good enough. It was whether a request could leave the country at all, and a pilot that cannot become production is a cost line with no return attached.

The DPDP Act is what turned that from a procurement preference into a board-level constraint, which is why the announcement is full of CTOs rather than heads of innovation.

What It Means For Marketing Teams

Mostly that the internal objection changes shape. Work that was blocked at legal because inference happened offshore now moves to the ordinary questions of accuracy, cost and who signs off the output.

It also widens what the regulated end of the market can touch. Personalisation, service automation and content review inside a bank or insurer were the use cases most often shelved on residency grounds, and those are the ones that come back first.

What Was Said

Irina Ghose, managing director for India at Anthropic, said the company committed in August to bringing Claude inference to India and is delivering on that promise, and called it a long-term commitment. Sandeep Dutta, president of AWS India and South Asia, said data residency is the parameter that decides whether AI stays confined to pilots or reaches full production.
