Bluesky Triples Its Video Limit To Ten Minutes

Bluesky has raised its video limit from three minutes to ten, lifted the maximum file size to 300MB and says uploads are now two to three times faster.
- New limit: 10 minutes, up from 3
- File size: up to 300MB
- Upload speed: 2 to 3 times faster, per the company
- Also available on other AT Protocol apps: Bluescreen, Reelo and Skylight
- Similarweb put active users down more than 25 per cent year on year as of July 2026
Where Bluesky Now Sits Against The Rest
Threads supports five minutes. X caps free users at 140 seconds and reserves longer uploads for subscribers, alongside a new editor meant to encourage original video.
Ten minutes puts Bluesky ahead of both on the free tier, which is a deliberate position rather than an incidental one. For a platform with no advertising business to protect, storage is the only cost of a longer limit, and being the most permissive place to post is one of the few levers available.
The Number That Frames The Announcement
Similarweb data put Bluesky’s active users down more than 25 per cent year on year as of July 2026.
A feature expansion arriving against that backdrop reads differently from one arriving during growth. This is a retention move, aimed at the creators most likely to leave, who are the ones whose formats do not fit inside three minutes.
The Protocol Does The Distribution
The change also lands on other apps built on the AT Protocol, including Bluescreen, Reelo and Skylight.
That is the structural difference between Bluesky and its competitors. A limit raised here is raised across an ecosystem of clients the company does not own, which spreads the benefit and the storage bill in ways a closed platform never has to reckon with.
