YouTube Music is rolling out labels to identify songs created primarily using generative artificial intelligence, including tracks where AI generated the composition and the vocals.

  • Platform: YouTube Music, and the main YouTube app
  • Where: the player page, for tracks where AI played a significant role
  • Detail: the label can be tapped for more information about the track
  • Detection: music partners plus the platform's own tools

What YouTube Music Is Disclosing

The degree, not just the fact. The label is applied where AI has played a significant role, with the clearest case being a track whose composition and vocals were both generated, and it carries a tap-through to further information rather than standing alone as a badge.

The labelling follows principles already in use on YouTube for disclosing AI in content, so this is an extension of an existing framework rather than a new one.

Why The Detection Side Matters More

Because a disclosure rule is only as good as the ability to apply it. The platform states it is working with music partners and using its own detection tools, which is an admission that self-declaration alone would not cover the catalogue.

That is the live problem across every platform adopting this kind of labelling. Generated audio is cheap to produce and arrives in volume, and the labelling burden falls on infrastructure rather than on the uploader.

What It Means For The Business Of Music

Disclosure changes what a listener can choose, which is the point. For rights holders the label is a boundary marker in a catalogue where provenance has become genuinely hard to establish, and for advertisers and partners it is the beginning of a vocabulary for talking about what sits next to their brand.

The rollout comes as generative AI tools are increasingly used in music production and creation, which is the pressure that made a label necessary in the first place.
