Wipro Consumer Care Enters Pet Food With Snuggles

Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting has entered India’s pet food market with Snuggles, a premium pet nutrition brand launched to coincide with International Dog Day.
- Company: Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, India
- Brand: Snuggles
- Debut product: dry dog food combining kibble with freeze-dried chicken chunks
- Market size cited: over Rs 5,500 crore
- Opening portfolio: three life-stage and breed-specific variants
Why Snuggles Leads On Format Rather Than Price
The debut product pairs conventional kibble with freeze-dried chicken chunks in the same pack, which Wipro describes as a first of its kind in India. Freeze-drying is a way of keeping meat shelf-stable without cooking it down, and it costs more than extruding everything into a single biscuit.
Leading with that rather than with price tells you where the company thinks the fight is. Dry dog food in India has long been bought on cost per kilo, and a brand entering late cannot win that argument against incumbents with scale. A visible format difference is something a first-time buyer can see through the pack window.
A Category Where Most Buyers Are New
Wipro puts 67 per cent of Indian pet parents in the first-time category. That figure is the whole strategy in one number.
A market of experienced owners is a share fight, decided by which brand a dog already tolerates. A market of first-timers is a recruitment fight, decided by who explains the category most convincingly at the shelf and who the vet mentions. It rewards claims that can be checked: human-grade ingredients, named nutrients, a formulation developed with veterinarians.
What The Company Is Actually Buying Into
Anil Chugh, president of the foods business and chief operating officer for new business, framed the opportunity as superior nutrition and trusted ingredients at a price that delivers value, backed by Wipro’s sales, distribution and brand building.
Distribution is the honest part of that sentence. Wipro Consumer Care already reaches general trade at scale through soaps and lighting, and pet food is one of the few new categories where an FMCG distribution network transfers almost intact. Dr Saurabh Shekhar, managing partner for pet care, called the category significantly underpenetrated, which is the polite way of saying most Indian dogs are still fed leftovers.
