Why Brands Should Enter Awards, Not Just Their Agencies

At most award ceremonies the brand appears in one place: the client line under the agency's name. The marketing team that set the objective, wrote the brief, defended the idea in the boardroom and carried the results for a year is thanked in the speech and then goes home.
That is changing, and it should. Brands should enter awards in their own right, because the most important work of building a brand does not happen in a single campaign.
Brand building is a year-round practice
A campaign is one moment. Building a brand is the sum of hundreds of decisions: positioning, product, pricing, distribution, customer experience, partnerships, and the patience to stay consistent when it would be easier to chase the quarter. Much of that work is invisible from the outside. Brand awards exist to judge it as a whole.
Why brands should enter awards themselves
When a marketing team enters its own work, it tells a fuller story than any agency entry can. It can show business momentum over twelve months, the team and ways of working behind it, innovation that went beyond advertising, and the impact on the business and the brand. It can recognise in-house creative teams, who increasingly make a large share of a brand's work. And it lets the marketer, not the agency, decide how the year is told.
It helps inside the business
For a marketing leader, recognition from an independent jury is persuasive where it matters most: in front of their own leadership. It turns marketing from a cost to be defended into a capability to be proud of, and it supports the case for the next ambitious plan.
It helps recruit
Strong marketers want to work where marketing is taken seriously. A brand recognised for its marketing team, its in-house studio or its leadership signals exactly that, and makes the next great hire far easier.
It strengthens the agency relationship
A brand entry does not compete with its agency's work. It frames it. The best agency relationships are partnerships, and recognition for both sides of that partnership reflects how good work actually happens.
