WhatsApp Introduces Guest Calling For People Without Accounts

WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, letting people without a WhatsApp account join audio and video calls through a link, with free end-to-end encrypted calls and no time limits.

  • Access: a shareable call link, opened in a computer browser
  • Control: host approval required, with a waiting room before admission
  • Capacity: one-to-one or group calls with up to 32 participants
  • Next: calendar integrations planned later this year

How Guest Calling Works

Through the Calls tab. A user selects the plus icon, generates a call link and shares it, and the guest opens that link in a browser, enters a name and waits to be admitted.

In-call features are available to guests, including computer screen sharing, emoji reactions and the option to raise a hand, so the experience is not a stripped-down observer mode.

What The Limits Are For

Containment. Guests cannot see other participants' phone numbers, cannot send messages and cannot add other people to the call, and the host can remove a guest at any time.

Those three restrictions matter because WhatsApp identity is a phone number. Opening a call to someone outside the network without exposing the numbers inside it is the design problem, and the waiting room and approval step are the answer to it.

Why This Is A Business Move

Because it puts WhatsApp where the meeting happens rather than where the contacts are. The planned calendar integrations make that explicit: a plugin, a connected account, and a call link inside a Google Calendar or Outlook invitation, joinable with or without an account.

That is a direct bid for the scheduled external meeting, which is the one category of call WhatsApp's phone-number model has always made awkward. Keeping those calls free, end-to-end encrypted and without a time limit is the competitive edge being offered against the meeting tools already sitting in that calendar slot.

The feature follows other calling updates introduced on the platform this year.
