What Generated Advertising Does To The Rules On Children

Advertising to children is the most heavily restricted corner of the business, and the restrictions assume a particular economics: that making a piece of communication costs enough that somebody senior reviews it before it exists.

Remove that cost and the review does not automatically disappear, but it stops being structurally guaranteed.

What the rules on advertising to children actually restrict

Not just what can be said. They restrict pressure, exaggeration, and depicting behaviour a child might copy unsafely. The Advertising Standards Council of India code carries specific provisions on advertising addressed to minors, and the principle underneath all of them is that persuasion aimed at someone who cannot yet assess it is treated differently.

That is a judgement about the audience, not about the words, which makes it the kind of rule a generation tool is structurally bad at applying.

A model can be told not to say something. It cannot tell who is going to be watching.

Where the risk actually sits

In volume and in targeting, not in the headline. A brand producing hundreds of variants for an algorithm to distribute has weakened the two things the rules depend on: that a person saw each piece, and that somebody knew who it would reach.

The most likely failure is not an offensive ad. It is an unremarkable one that ends up in front of an audience it was never written for.

What this asks of brands

A different control point. Reviewing every variant is no longer possible, so the check moves to the generation rules and to the distribution settings, which is where the exposure now lives.

That is a less satisfying answer than approving a storyboard. It is also the only one that scales with the output, and it puts the responsibility somewhere uncomfortable, with the people who configure the system rather than the people who write the line.
