Shakthi Nagappan, appointed chairman and managing director of PreferCo

PreferCo has appointed Shakthi Nagappan as chairman and managing director. The precision fermentation company is based in Hyderabad.

Why The Appointment Is A Marketing Story

Because the previous job was place branding at scale. Turning a city into a recognised address for an industry is the same discipline as building a category brand: you are persuading people to associate a name with a capability before the evidence is complete.

Moving from selling the ecosystem to selling one company inside it is a narrowing of the same skill, and an unusually direct test of whether the reputation was the place's or the person's.

What Shakthi Nagappan Has To Explain First

What it is. The category makes proteins and ingredients through engineered microorganisms rather than animals or extraction, and almost no consumer and few investors can define it unprompted.

That makes the communications job category education before company positioning, which is the same sequence Indian pharma had to run through two decades ago.

Nagappan said he is enormously excited about the opportunity, and that India demonstrated through vaccines it can combine science, engineering talent, manufacturing excellence and scale. Co-founder and chief executive Akhil Gawar said his leadership will be central to the ambition of building PreferCo into a globally relevant company.
