Campus Activewear Appoints Rakesh Thakur As Chief Financial Officer

Rakesh Thakur, chief financial officer at Campus Activewear

Campus Activewear has appointed Rakesh Thakur as chief financial officer, adding him to the company's key managerial personnel.

  • Appointment: chief financial officer, Campus Activewear
  • Experience: nearly 23 years across consumer businesses
  • Previously: group chief financial officer at boAt, Imagine Marketing Limited
  • Earlier: senior roles at Hindustan Unilever and GSK Consumer Healthcare, and before that Samsung India and PepsiCo India
  • Remit: financial governance, capital efficiency and the next phase of profitable growth
  • Spokespeople: Nikhil Aggarwal, chief executive, Campus Activewear

Why This Appointment Reads Clearly

The stated remit uses the phrase "profitable growth", and in a consumer company that is never an accident. It signals that the growth part is considered solved and the profitable part is not.

Campus Activewear sells sports and athleisure footwear in a market that has become brutally competitive at the mass end, with international brands pushing down on price and a long tail of direct-to-consumer entrants pushing up on marketing spend. Volume in that environment is available to anyone willing to pay for it. Margin is the harder thing.

What Rakesh Thakur Did Before

The boAt years are the relevant ones. Thakur was group chief financial officer at Imagine Marketing during the period when boAt was scaling hard in audio, a category with the same shape as footwear: fast-moving, heavily marketed, price-pressured and dependent on getting supply chain and working capital right.

Behind that sit Hindustan Unilever and GSK Consumer Healthcare, where his work covered finance transformation, integration, business restructuring and supply chain strategy, plus earlier spells at Samsung India and PepsiCo India.

The Pattern Worth Noticing

Aggarwal's framing put the emphasis on financial discipline. That is the ordinary language of a CFO announcement, but the combination here is less ordinary: classical FMCG training followed by a new-age consumer brand, then a listed manufacturer.

Indian consumer companies have spent several years hiring finance leaders out of the D2C world specifically because those executives have seen what happens when customer acquisition cost outruns contribution margin. That is a lesson the older businesses learned slowly and the newer ones learned expensively.
