PayU And Malaysia Airlines Sign An MoU On Indian Bookings

PayU and Malaysia Airlines have signed a memorandum of understanding on Indian bookings, pairing a payments network with an airline that treats India as a priority market.
- Signed: 12 October 2026
- Scope: payment innovations, flexible payment options, exclusive offers and co-branded marketing
- Segments: leisure, premium, student and corporate travellers
- Signatories: Dersenish Aresandiran, Malaysia Aviation Group; Hemang Dattani, PayU Payments Private Limited
What The PayU Agreement Actually Commits To
Very little, and the companies say so. The partnership remains exploratory, with the MoU setting a framework to identify and develop initiatives rather than announcing anything a traveller can use today.
That is worth stating plainly, because an MoU reported as a launch is how a framework becomes a promise nobody made.
Why Travel Is The Right Category For It
Hemang Dattani, chief business officer at PayU Payments, called travel a high-intent category where seamless payments, flexibility and relevant offers can meaningfully influence the customer experience.
The underlying logic is sound. An international flight is among the largest discretionary purchases an Indian household makes in a year, the decision window is long, and the drop-off at checkout is unusually sensitive to whether a preferred payment method is present. Few categories reward payment convenience as directly.
What Each Side Brings
PayU says it serves more than 450,000 businesses in India, from large enterprises and e-commerce companies to small and medium-sized businesses, and counts Prosus among its investors.
Dersenish Aresandiran, chief commercial officer of airline business at Malaysia Aviation Group, said India remains an important and strategic market, and that the collaboration would let the airline explore payment and engagement solutions matched to how Indian travellers now book.
What happens next is the test. An MoU costs nothing to sign and a payment integration costs a quarter to build, so the thing to watch is whether a student fare or a corporate booking actually carries a PayU option before the next travel season. More industry news on Ad Tribe.
