Packaging Design Is The Next Thing To Go Generative

Packaging design has quietly been one of the slowest creative processes in consumer goods. Rounds take weeks, the variables are numerous and every change has to be checked against a print process that does not forgive.

It is also, structurally, an almost perfect target for generation.

Why packaging design suits the tools

Because the brief is unusually hard-edged. A fixed area, mandatory legal elements, a known print process and a measurable outcome in shelf standout. Constraints of that kind are what generation handles well, unlike an open creative brief where the goal is a judgement.

There is also real volume: variants by size, by market, by language, by channel, each of which was previously a separate studio job.

An open brief asks what this should be. A pack brief asks what fits. Only one of those is a question a machine can get right.

What does not transfer

The physical. A pack exists as a thing people pick up, and no amount of on-screen variation accounts for how a finish behaves under shop lighting, how a substrate takes an ink, or what a structure does when it is stacked.

That is the part the category keeps underestimating, because the generated comp always looks better than the printed result, and the gap is only discovered at the proofing stage when the decision has already been signed off twice.

Where this lands commercially

On the adaptation studios, first and hardest, since the size and language variants were the volume that made the economics work.

Design leadership is less affected, because deciding what a pack should say in a crowded aisle remains a judgement about a shopper rather than a problem of fitting elements into an area. The brands getting value out of this are using the saved rounds to test more structural ideas, rather than to produce more versions of a decision already taken.
