Meta Gives Facebook Users Direct Control Over Their Feed

Meta has begun rolling out Your Algorithm on Facebook, letting users describe what they want to see rather than only signalling it by behaviour.

  • Feature: Your Algorithm, on Facebook Feed and Reels
  • Input: topics users add and manage, plus written feedback on individual posts
  • Response: Meta states recommendations adapt in real time, within the same session
  • Precedent: Instagram introduced it for Reels in December 2025, with similar controls on Threads

What Your Algorithm Changes About Ranking

The type of signal. Facebook's recommendations have been driven mainly by what people like, comment on and watch, which is behaviour inferred after the fact. A stated interest is different: it is declared, specific, and often contradicts the behaviour.

Meta says large language models are now helping the ranking systems pick up the interests, context and intent behind natural-language input, and calls the result an algorithm you can actually talk to. The new input works alongside the engagement signals rather than replacing them.

The Smaller Change That Will Do More Work

The three-dot menu. After a user taps Interested or Not interested, Facebook may now ask follow-up questions so the person can say what they liked or disliked about a post.

That is where the volume of feedback will come from. A dedicated Your Algorithm space is used by people who go looking for it; a follow-up question on a post somebody has already reacted to catches everyone, and it collects the reason rather than just the verdict.

What Advertisers Should Take From It

Declared interest is a cleaner targeting signal than inferred interest and a more volatile one. A user who can remove a topic from their feed in a sentence can remove a category that a media plan was built around, and can do it in the same session.

The flip side is that organic reach becomes slightly more earnable: content that genuinely matches a stated interest has a route in that does not depend on prior engagement. Whether that holds at scale is what the Instagram rollout since December 2025 should already be able to tell Meta, and has not yet told anybody else.
