Instagram's Edits App Gets A Canvas That Runs Across Slides

Meta has added a multi-slide carousel editor to Instagram's Edits app, letting creators arrange photos, video clips and typography on a single shared canvas that spans several slides.
- Company: Meta
- Product: the Edits app, Instagram's standalone editing tool
- What is new: a carousel editor built on one canvas across multiple slides
- Availability: rolling out on iOS, with Android to follow
- Publishing: direct to Instagram at high resolution, without rendering files locally
What The Edits App Can Now Do
The headline capability is continuity. A panoramic image can run across slide boundaries, and a headline can span two adjacent slides, so the carousel reads as one composition rather than a sequence of separate posts.
Around that sit custom layout grids, padding controls, colour grading, scaling, rotation and stickers made with the cutout tool. Slides can be duplicated, reordered and inserted on either side of an existing one by dragging.
Why Brand Presets Are The Part That Matters
Saved presets carry into the carousel editor: typography, colour palettes, text styles, colour grading and audio. For a brand running a social team, that is the difference between a template and a guideline nobody follows.
The quiet benefit is export quality. Designing elsewhere and bringing files in has always cost a generation of compression, and publishing straight out of the tool removes that step. Anyone who has watched a carefully set caption turn soft on upload will recognise the problem being solved.
What It Signals
Carousels have outperformed single images on Instagram for long enough that the format now carries a lot of brand communication, and it has been served by tools that were never built for it. Giving the format a proper editor inside Meta's own app is an attempt to keep that work from starting in someone else's software.
Finished carousels can also be downloaded for use on other platforms. Meta says it will keep extending the editor based on how creators use it. More platform news.
