McCain Foods Buys A Gujarat Potato Plant It Did Not Build

Frozen potato processing in Gujarat, where McCain Foods is acquiring the Falcon Agrifriz plant to add capacity beside its Mehsana operations

McCain Foods is acquiring Falcon Agrifriz Foods' frozen potato processing business in Gujarat, adding a second plant in a state where it already runs one.

  • Target: Falcon Agrifriz Foods' frozen potato processing business, Gujarat
  • Complements: McCain's existing operations in Mehsana
  • Status: closing subject to customary conditions
  • Scale, as stated by McCain: more than 940 direct employees in India and more than 2,500 partner farmers

Why McCain Foods Is Buying Rather Than Building

The plant is modern and purpose-built, and McCain states it was completed in under two years. Matching that from a standing start would take longer than the demand curve allows, which is the usual reason a processor buys capacity instead of pouring concrete.

Pierre Danet, Regional President for Asia Pacific and South Africa, said India continues to be a priority growth market and that the acquisition builds on nearly three decades of investment in people, local operations and agricultural partnerships.

The Farmers Are Part Of The Asset

McCain states Falcon Agrifriz brings more than 450 employees and relationships with over 1,000 farmers across Gujarat.

That second number is the one worth reading twice. A frozen potato business is a contract farming business with a factory attached: the variety, the storage and the grower relationships decide the product long before any line runs. Buying a plant without its growers would be buying half of it.

What It Means For The Network

Two facilities in one state is not duplication so much as flexibility. It lets a processor move volume between lines, run different product formats in parallel and keep serving export commitments while domestic demand moves, which is harder with a single site.

Three Decades Of Building Up To This

McCain states it launched in India in 1998 with a team of three. Reaching more than 940 direct employees and over 2,500 partner farmers from that start is a slow build by the standards of most consumer categories, and it is the reason the company can describe an acquisition as confidence rather than as entry.

The frozen potato category in India has grown on the back of quick service restaurants and, more recently, on home freezers deep enough to hold a bag of fries. Both demand lines are still expanding, which is what makes a second plant a capacity decision rather than a defensive one.
