May Yassin Elevated To Head Of Corporate Affairs At Vodafone Egypt

May Yassin has been elevated to head of corporate affairs at Vodafone Egypt, taking charge of the function twelve years after joining the operator.

  • Role: head of corporate affairs, Vodafone Egypt
  • Joined Vodafone: 2014, as marketing communication and people engagement manager
  • Experience: more than sixteen years across communications, marketing and development
  • Remit: external communications, sustainable development, corporate reputation and stakeholder engagement
  • Also covering: strategic planning and budgeting, and creative initiatives

What The Corporate Affairs Function Now Holds

The listed remit is wider than communications. External communications and corporate reputation sit alongside sustainable development, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning and budgeting, which is a function that has absorbed several previously separate departments.

That consolidation is the pattern across telecom operators in the region. A network business is regulated, politically visible and permanently in negotiation with governments, and separating the people who talk to the press from the people who talk to ministries stopped being workable. Putting budgeting in the same function is the less common part, and it gives the role a say in what gets funded rather than only in how it is announced.

Twelve Years In One Company

Yassin joined Vodafone in 2014 as marketing communication and people engagement manager, a role that sat between marketing and internal communications rather than in either.

The route from there to corporate affairs is a recognisable one: someone who started by explaining the company to its own staff, then to its customers, and eventually to everyone else. Twelve years inside a single operator is also its own qualification in a function where credibility with regulators and stakeholders is built slowly and does not transfer between employers. She describes herself as a communications leader driven by purpose and focused on creating a positive impact on society, and brings more than sixteen years across communications, marketing and development roles.
