JioHotstar has launched in the UK, Canada and Singapore, taking a catalogue of more than 160,000 hours across twelve-plus languages into three markets with large Indian diaspora audiences.
- Markets: the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore
- Catalogue: more than 160,000 hours, across 12-plus languages, with 30,000-plus hours added annually
- Availability: mobile and connected TV, via the App Store and Google Play
- Plans: quarterly subscriptions introduced alongside annual
- Content: Indian television, films, regional programming, non-fiction, kids and anime
Bigg Boss Is Doing JioHotstar's Heavy Lifting
The catalogue number is the headline, but the acquisition mechanic is the reality show. Bigg Boss will be available in six languages, with viewers in all three markets able to vote live across editions. The UK and Canada get a 24-hour live feed, and Canada gets the Hindi edition seven days ahead of its television broadcast.
That last detail is the interesting one. Running a week ahead of broadcast turns the platform into the only place a diaspora viewer can stay current, and reality television is the format where being current actually matters. It is a sharper retention tool than a large back catalogue.
The Quarterly Plan Is A Tell
Introducing quarterly subscriptions alongside annual ones is the pricing move of a service that expects seasonal viewing. Cricket seasons and reality formats produce exactly that pattern, and a quarterly tier lets a viewer buy the season rather than the year.
New originals in the launch slate include Ali Baba Aur Chaalis Bhoot, Prince of Mollywood, Part Timers and The Court, with film premieres through the year. More media and streaming news.
