Huma Qureshi Launches Freefall, A Handloom Saree Brand, With Dressfolk

Actor Huma Qureshi has launched Freefall, a saree brand made in partnership with the handloom label Dressfolk. Its positioning puts the woman, rather than the occasion, at the centre of the saree.

  • Brand: Freefall
  • Founder and face: Huma Qureshi
  • Partner: Dressfolk, the Delhi handloom label founded by Nitin Mehrotra
  • Weaves: Chanderi, Varanasi and Kutch
  • Making: each saree made with master artisans, taking more than 50 hours
  • Price: not disclosed

What Freefall Is Positioned Against

The occasion. Most of the saree market is sold around weddings and festivals, and the product is marketed as something a woman wears for an event. Freefall's idea is the reverse, sarees designed around the wearer and meant to feel effortless and contemporary. Qureshi described it as the space where heritage meets the way people live now, and ultimately about "feeling like yourself in what you wear".

The launch image makes the same point. It shows the saree in an ordinary setting, on a train seat by the window, rather than at a ceremony.

Why The Partnership Model Matters

Celebrity labels often fail at the unglamorous part: supply. Handloom is slow, skilled and hard to scale, and a brand built on an actor's name cannot invent a weaving network. Pairing with Dressfolk, which already works with artisans across these clusters, gives Freefall a supply chain from the first day.

Mehrotra framed Dressfolk's role as protecting the craft while finding it a wider audience, saying the intent was never to dilute it. That is the tension to watch. Fifty hours of weaving a saree is a premium, limited product, and a celebrity audience is a mass one.

What It Tells Marketers

Craft brands in India have mostly sold heritage. Freefall is trying to sell a feeling instead, and to use heritage as the proof rather than the pitch. If it works, the lesson is less about celebrity than about moving a category out of the occasion calendar.

Dressfolk's handloom range is at dressfolk.com. More brands.
