How to Choose the Right Award Categories

Teams spend weeks on the case film and minutes on the category. It should be closer to the other way round. The category decides the question a jury asks of the work, and the same piece can look ordinary under one question and remarkable under another.

Choose award categories before you write

Each category is judged against its own intent. A Film and Video entry is read for moving-image craft. Media Strategy and Innovation is read for media thinking. Performance and Growth wants measurable outcomes with evidence proportionate to the claim. If you write the entry first and pick the category afterwards, you will usually end up rewriting it. Decide where the work competes, then write to that category's question.

Ask what the work is genuinely best at

Be honest about the work's real strength. Was it the idea, the craft, the media thinking, the use of data, the cultural insight or the results? A campaign with a modest film but a brilliant media idea belongs in media categories, not film. A launch built around a clever activation belongs in experiential. The best category is the one where a jury will see the strongest version of the work.

When to enter more than one category

Strong work often deserves more than one. An integrated idea might compete in Integrated Campaign for its whole, and in a specialist category for the part that was exceptional. The rule is simple: enter a category only if the entry can be written to answer that category's question directly. Recycling the same text across several categories without adapting it rarely helps. At Ad Tribe Awards - South, one piece of work can be entered into up to eight categories in a single entry.

Do not overlook the specialist categories

Some of the most interesting categories are the ones teams forget to consider:

  • Regional Language Excellence, for work where writing and craft in a South Indian language are central to the idea.
  • Local Culture and Insight, for work built on something only an audience here would recognise.
  • Small Budget, Big Impact, where the strength of the idea is judged against the size of the spend.
  • AI, Data and Technology Innovation, where technology contributed materially to the idea or the outcome, not just to production.
  • New Brand and Challenger, judged against the position the brand started from.

Remember the three families

Categories are only one layer of the decision. Ad Tribe Awards - South has 54 categories across three families: 22 Work and Campaign Awards for individual pieces of work, 12 Agency Awards for the agency's year as a business, and 20 Brand Awards entered by marketing teams for their own practice. A strong year might be recognised in all three.

Read each category's description before you commit, and match the work to the question it answers best. The category you choose is the lens the jury will use. Choose the one that shows the work at its best.
