HDFC Life has released a term insurance film built on the idea that life does not give anyone time to prepare, released on the insurer’s own channel on 24 August.

  • Brand: HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited
  • Product in frame: Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus
  • Length: 45 seconds
  • Premise: a night drive in the rain, a skid, and a phone call home
  • Marketing lead: Pritika Shah, head of marketing and CSR

Why HDFC Life Stops One Beat Before The Category Does

A man drives home through heavy rain at night. The car skids. He calls his wife, and the first thing he says is that he only wanted to hear her voice.

He survives. That is the choice worth noting, because term insurance advertising in India almost always runs the other way: the accident happens, the family is left behind, and the ad is addressed to the guilt of the person watching. Here the near miss does the work instead, and the line the wife gets afterwards, that the accident made her realise anything can happen tomorrow, is the argument stated plainly by a character rather than a voiceover.

Why Preparedness Is A Harder Sell Than Fear

Fear converts quickly and ages badly. A film that shows a widow and an unpaid bill will move some people to buy and make many more change the channel, and it leaves the brand permanently associated with the worst day of a customer’s life.

Pritika Shah framed the campaign around families remaining secure in a policyholder’s absence, and around timely planning being the part people postpone. That is a slower pitch. It asks the viewer to act on an abstraction rather than a dread, which is why the film needs a concrete incident to hang it on.

The GST Change Sitting Behind The Campaign

HDFC Life points to the recent GST exemption on term plans as having improved affordability, alongside digital sales and multi-channel tie-ups making the products easier to reach.

That matters for timing. A category that has just become cheaper has a reason to spend on awareness rather than on price messaging, because the objection it is fighting was never really cost. It was the belief that there is still time to get around to it, and this film is aimed squarely at that.
