Gopakumar Nair Takes Over As AAAI Secretary General

Gopakumar Nair has been named secretary general of the Advertising Agencies Association of India. Gopakumar R. Nair takes over on 1 October, having joined the association in August.
- Role: secretary general, AAAI, effective 1 October 2026
- Experience: more than 35 years in the industry
- Previously: 21 years with WPP and GroupM, and eight years with Madison, in senior commercial operations and finance roles
- Onboarding: joined the AAAI in August 2026 and completed a structured orientation before taking the post
- Succeeds: Sudesh Kapoor, who ran the secretariat for close to two decades and stays on as senior advisor through the transition
- The association: founded in 1945, representing India's advertising agencies with advertisers, media owners and government
Why Gopakumar Nair's Background Fits The Job
Because the secretary general runs an organisation rather than a point of view. Three decades in commercial operations and finance is the relevant preparation for a body whose influence depends on negotiating terms, servicing members and keeping an institution solvent.
His years sat on the media buying side of the business, which is where most of the association's live disputes about payment and pitch conduct originate.
The Timing
Unusually complete. The presidency changed hands at the annual general body meeting on 30 September, and the secretariat changes hands the next day, so the association is turning over its elected and its permanent leadership at once.
The overlap arrangements are deliberate. Sudesh Kapoor remains as senior advisor and the outgoing president stays on the board, which is how an institution avoids losing its memory in a single week.
What Was Said
AAAI president Srinivasan K. Swamy, speaking before the election, said Nair's extensive experience in the advertising and media industry would be valuable to the association. Nair said he was honoured to have the opportunity to serve the advertising industry through the AAAI.
