Google has made Gemini in Chrome available to all Android users in India, and added its auto browse feature on desktop and Android for subscribers to its AI Pro and AI Ultra plans.

  • Platform: Chrome, on Android in India, after a desktop rollout earlier in the year
  • What the assistant does: summarises long articles, answers questions about a page and works with Google apps including Keep and Calendar
  • Also included: image generation and customisation in the browser using Nano Banana
  • New for subscribers: auto browse, on desktop and Android

What Gemini In Chrome Changes

The assistant was already a reading aid. It could summarise a page, answer a question about it and save the result into another Google product without the user switching tabs.

Auto browse is a different category of thing. Google describes it as taking on repetitive online tasks on the user's behalf: booking parking for an event, filling in long forms, ordering groceries. The assistant stops describing the web and starts operating it.

Why That Matters Beyond Convenience

Every business on the open web is built on the assumption that a person arrives at a page, sees what is on it and decides. An assistant completing a form or an order on someone's behalf removes most of that surface.

The page still gets the transaction and loses the visit, which is where merchandising, upsell and most advertising live. It is too early to size that, but the direction is clear enough that anyone selling through a website should be watching the rollout rather than the announcement.

The Safety Framing Is Worth Reading Closely

Google says the capabilities were built with security in mind and that its models are trained to detect known threats including prompt injection, where instructions hidden in a web page attempt to manipulate an AI system. Auto browse also asks for confirmation before completing certain sensitive actions.

That is a meaningful admission in itself: an assistant that reads pages and then acts on them is exposed to whatever those pages contain, and the mitigation is detection plus a human check at the riskiest moments rather than prevention. More platform news.
