FSSAI Proposes A Red Hexagon On The Front Of High Sugar, Fat And Salt Packs

FSSAI has proposed a single-phase rollout of front-of-pack nutrition labelling, under which packaged foods crossing thresholds for added sugar, added fat or salt would carry a warning symbol on the front of the pack.

  • Symbol: a red hexagon on a white square background
  • Placement: top left of the front of the pack, prominently displayed
  • Size: type at least one point larger than the nutrition information table on the back
  • Content: the nutrient that crosses the threshold is named inside the hexagon; where two or three are crossed, all are named in the same symbol
  • Thresholds: based on the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024, from ICMR-NIN, distinguishing added sugar from total sugar and added fat from total fat; trans fat remains governed separately
  • Reference point: a format similar to Canada's system

What FSSAI Is Proposing For The Pack

The argument moves to the front. Indian labelling has so far kept nutrition detail on the back in a table most shoppers never read, and the earlier debate was about a positive star rating. A warning hexagon at the top left, set larger than the back-of-pack table, is a different instrument: it is designed to be seen rather than consulted.

The single-phase proposal matters too. A phased rollout would have let categories adapt one at a time; a single phase puts every affected pack on the same clock.

What Brands Should Be Planning For

Artwork, and then positioning. The top left of the front panel is prime territory, usually holding a logo or a claim, and a mandatory symbol there reorders the whole hierarchy of a pack. For a brand whose proposition rests on indulgence, the harder question is what the rest of the pack says once the hexagon is on it.

The Timeline

FSSAI has around four months to issue and finalise draft regulations, followed by a mandatory 60-day consultation period for domestic stakeholders and for feedback through the WTO platform. Food business operators would then get a 365-day voluntary transition period.
